Baselworld 2017

During the last weekend of March I traveled to Switzerland and Basel (Basel) for the 100th edition of Baselworld. During these two days I visited the most important fair in its field, the world watch and jewelery tradeshow. So today let’s take a look at this unforgettable experience.

This unavoidable and trend-setting event brings together all the key players in all sectors of the watch industry and the jewelery industry. For a century, Baselworld is an essential date in the calendar of the branch and each new edition is eagerly awaited.

Baselworld 2017 brought together more than 106,000 buyers from 100 countries. With the world’s most renowned brands, Baselworld has honored its reputation as a hub for an entire industry. The watch trends that I have observed and which will make the news of the next twelve months are the following: the dials of color such as blue, gray, green or burgundy appear alongside black or silver dials. As for the bracelets, the one that is hot trend is the bracelet with mesh Milanese. This year, to celebrate their anniversary, several watch houses have honored the “vintage” watches.

Faithful to its role as forerunner, the fair presented a new concept Les Ateliers, a space specially dedicated to independent watchmakers. My eye was attracted by the brand Kerbedanz and their latest model of Tree of Life watch in green or black version.

The Swiss house Charriol presented the new versions of the St Tropez watch. Known for “watch-jewel’ for 30 years, the independent brand has bet on green and purple to illuminate women’s wrists this season. The new collection of jewelry “Laetitia” takes again the famous motif cable with colorful gemstones and worn as much by the girls as by the mothers.

Another interesting innovation in this edition was the Design Lab – a space dedicated to designers, mainly in jewelery and jewelry, which featured unique innovative pieces and avant-garde creations. I met a talented Greek jeweler, Theodoros, who specializes in unique pieces.

Passionate about the beauty of pearls, I was delighted by the new Startdust collection from the Australian brand Autore.Inspired by the beauty of the planets and constellations, with captivating lines and gemstones, this collection puts the pearls at the center of its creations.

The watch and jewelery industry is currently going through a challenging period, particularly affecting small businesses. The organizers decided to reduce the duration of the show and adjust prices accordingly. So, Baselworld 2018 will be held from Thursday 22 to Tuesday, March 27, 2018.
