The 70th edition of the Bangkok Gems & Jewelry Fair (BGJF) was a dazzling celebration of Thailand’s enduring leadership in the global gemstone and jewelry market! Organized by the Department of International Trade Promotion (DITP) and the Gem and Jewelry Institute of Thailand (GIT), BGJF took place from September 9-13, 2024. From the moment I stepped into the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center, I felt the buzz of excitement. Returning after five years, it felt like a grand homecoming. With over 1,100 exhibitors and 35,000 visitors, the event was a spectacular showcase of craftsmanship, innovation, and global connections. Let me take you on a journey through this unforgettable 70th birthday celebration of BGJF!
This year’s edition focused on innovation, sustainability, and reinforcing Thailand’s role as a global leader in gem and jewelry exports, which grew by 9.61% in 2023 despite global challenges. In the first half of 2024, Thailand exported USD 4.556 billion in gems and jewelry, marking an 8.48% increase from the previous year. The event highlighted Thailand’s ability to blend traditional craftsmanship with modern technologies and sustainable practices.
The fair’s exhibits showcased not only traditional Thai craftsmanship but also new approaches in the “Innovation and Design Zone,” which emphasized eco-friendly techniques like recycled materials and advanced 3D printing. Exhibitors presented collections that fused heritage with contemporary design, meeting the growing demand for sustainable luxury. Additionally, the fair offered opportunities for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to engage with international markets through initiatives like “The Jewellers” and “Smart Jewelers” programs. These initiatives brought together rising designers and entrepreneurs, especially from regions like Chanthaburi, known for its gemstone production. I found two standout gems in the New Faces zone: Nuj Collective, which specializes in modern healing crystal jewelry, and Siri Shaya , known for its exquisite fine jewelry using only spinels and diamonds.
A major highlight was the captivating “The Spirit of Jewelry Making” exhibition, curated by renowned Thai jeweler Saran Youkongdee. This exhibition explored how deeply rooted beliefs, from nature’s forces to religious symbols, have shaped Thai jewelry design across generations. The pieces on display reinterpreted these spiritual themes, creating timeless masterpieces that blend beauty with devotion. Visitors also had the chance to witness master artisans at work, showcasing the intricate art of jewelry making in real-time.
The Networking Reception at BGJF was another key highlight, bringing together Thailand’s top entrepreneurs and international industry leaders. Hosted by Mr. Pornvit Sila-On of the DITP and Mr. Sumed Prasongpongchai of GIT, the reception provided a vital platform for forging new business relationships. Attendees, including VIPs and global trade representatives, admired hand-selected jewelry masterpieces. The event also announced exciting expansion plans for the 2025 fair, reinforcing Thailand’s growing status as a world-class gem and jewelry destination. It was such a pleasure to reconnect with my press colleagues from around the world.
DITP also organized seminars on the Middle Eastern market, led by Dubai experts, offering practical advice on how Thai businesses can enter this lucrative region. Business matching services played a key role in the fair’s success, facilitating direct engagement between international buyers and local suppliers, creating numerous opportunities for trade expansion.
With over $100 million in expected transactions, the fair was not only a visual feast but also a crucial driver of trade in the gem and jewelry sector. Thailand’s emphasis on fine gemstones, intricate gold work, and innovative silver designs continues to draw international acclaim.
Looking ahead, the success of the 70th Bangkok Gems & Jewelry Fair demonstrates the continuous upward trajectory of Thailand’s gem and jewelry industry. The fair’s focus on innovation, sustainability, and global trade partnerships will likely set the standard for future editions, ensuring that Thailand remains a powerhouse in the global market for gems and jewelry. The 70th BGJF not only celebrated Thailand’s craftsmanship but also solidified its position in global trade, offering a diverse and future-oriented perspective on the industry. This edition’s success has ensured that Bangkok remains a key destination for international buyers, designers, and traders. The 71st edition is already planned, set for February 22-26, 2025. So, book your trip now, and I’ll see you in Bangkok!
