The India International Jewellery Show (IIJS) Premiere 2024, organized by the Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC), has once again proven its status as one of the most influential and large-scale events in the global gem and jewellery industry. Held from August 8th to 13th in two prominent venues in Mumbai—JIO World Convention Centre and Bombay Exhibition Centre—this 40th edition set a new record by generating a staggering USD 12 billion in business over six days. For the first time, I had the incredible opportunity to experience IIJS Premiere firsthand, and let me tell you, it was nothing short of magical. The energy, the glittering array of jewels, and the sheer scale of the event were beyond anything I had imagined. Today, I’m thrilled to share my journey through this remarkable tradeshow—a true celebration of the gem and jewellery industry on a global scale.
This year’s theme, “Brilliant Bharat,” resonated deeply with the pride I felt as I walked through the vast exhibition halls. It was a beautiful tribute to India’s rich tradition of jewellery craftsmanship, yet the event was far from just a nod to the past—it was a dazzling showcase of cutting-edge innovations and the expansive scale of the industry today. Spanning an impressive 135,000 square meters, the exhibition housed over 3,600 stalls and 2,100 exhibitors, each one more captivating than the last. The show attracted more than 50,000 buyers, including 15 international delegations from over 13 countries, truly underscoring its global significance.
Running concurrently with the main event was the IGJME Premiere, a major Machinery and Allied Expo at the Bombay Exhibition Centre. With over 220 companies showcasing the latest technological advancements in jewellery manufacturing, it was a fascinating blend of traditional craftsmanship meeting modern technology—highlighting the future of this dynamic industry.
One of the standout attractions at IIJS Premiere 2024, and a personal favorite of mine, was the Select Club. This exclusive section saw significant growth this year, with the number of participating brands soaring to 101 from just 60 in the previous edition. It was clear that the Select Club is poised to double in size in the near future. Nirav Bhansali’s words still ring in my ears: “Our primary focus remains on maintaining exceptional quality. A meticulous selection process ensures that only brands offering an ultra-luxury experience and exquisite designs are included in the Select Club.” And indeed, attendees, myself included, were mesmerized by the unparalleled elegance and sophistication on display. I found myself repeatedly drawn back to this area, where I discovered some truly breathtaking pieces that I simply couldn’t get enough of.
A major highlight of the event was the visit from Piyush Goyal, India’s Minister of Commerce & Industry. His presence added a layer of gravitas to the show as he interacted with trade members and emphasized the government’s commitment to supporting the gem and jewellery sector, particularly in light of the challenging global economic conditions. The reintroduction of the Diamond Imprest Licence, announced by Goyal, was a significant policy initiative aimed at further bolstering the industry.
The grand opening of IIJS Premiere 2024 was led by the Hon. Governor of Maharashtra, C. P. Radhakrishnan, who praised the GJEPC for making the show bigger and better each year. He spoke passionately about promoting “Brand India” globally and commended the industry for its substantial contributions to the country’s economy.
The event also featured several notable international participants, adding to its global allure. Delegations from Japan, Uzbekistan, and Cambodia were just a few among many who expressed admiration for India’s unparalleled expertise in jewellery design and craftsmanship. It was inspiring to witness these international connections being forged, promising exciting collaborations for the future.
But IIJS Premiere 2024 was not just about business; it was also a celebration of the industry’s talents and contributions. The show honored industry legends during its Celebration Night, recognizing individuals and companies that have made an indelible mark on the gems and jewellery landscape. The “40 Under 40” initiative was particularly inspiring, highlighting the young leaders who are driving innovation and shaping the future of the sector.
On a heartwarming note, the IIJS Premiere 2024 also hosted the 9th edition of the “Jewellers for Hope” charity fundraiser, graced by Bollywood actress Kareena Kapoor Khan. The event raised significant funds for two NGOs, showcasing the industry’s commitment to social responsibility.
For me, the IIJS Premiere 2024 was more than just a trade show—it was an unforgettable experience, a celebration of India’s rich jewellery heritage, and a glimpse into its dynamic future. The event set new benchmarks in business, innovation, and international collaboration, solidifying its place as the premier platform for the global gem and jewellery industry. As the industry continues to evolve, IIJS Premiere remains the heart of networking, inspiration, and growth, propelling the industry to dazzling new heights on the world stage.
